Petition challenging Pemra chief's appointment: LHC overrules registrar's objections

17 May, 2013

The Lahore High Court's Chief Justice on Thursday overruled an objection of "territorial jurisdiction" put up by the registrar's office on a petition challenging the appointment of Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).
The office had objected to the maintainability of the petition and asked the petitioner to move to Islamabad High Court for relief. However, the office fixed the petitioner before the Chief Justice as an "objection" case on the petitioner's request. The LHC chief justice took up the matter on Thursday and removed the objection. He also directed the office to fix the petition for hearing before any appropriate bench. A citizen, Shafqat Jamal Ranjha, had filed the petition contending that Rashid Hameed had been appointed as the chairman of Pemra in violation of merit.
