The dollar was higher against the rupee on the currency market on Monday amid slight improvement in supply of the greenback, dealers said. The rupee drifted lower against the dollar, losing 10 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 99.85 and Rs 100.05, they said. The national currency also shed five paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 128.10 and Rs 128.35, they said.
In the first Asian trade, the yen bounced off a 4-1/2-year low against the dollar after Japan's economy minister suggested the government might be satisfied with its current level, following a sharp decline over the past six months.
The dollar was down 0.4 percent at 102.81, having slid about one percent to 102.00. The euro plumbed 131.05 from 132.45 late in New York, before steadying at 131.95. Support is seen around 131.10, with resistance above 132.55. The dollar was trading at Rs 55.02 versus the Indian rupee, the greenback was at 3.0220 against the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.1410 in relation to the Chinese yuan. According to the currency dealers, the dollar resumed trading at its last week closing of Rs 99.85 and Rs 100.00 as its buying and selling rates, respectively. However, on close of trading, the dollar registered slight gain of five-paisa to Rs 99.90 on buying counter whereas it remained unchanged at Rs 100.00 on selling counter.
The national currency remained strong and was improved against the pound sterling. The pound's buying and selling rates were declined from the last Saturday closing of Rs 151.50 and Rs 151.75 to Rs 151.40 and Rs 151.65, respectively, the dealers said.
The dollar opened at Rs 99.80 for buying and Rs 100 for selling against last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session, and closed at Rs 99.80 for buying and Rs 100 for selling by the end of evening session.
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 154 for buying and Rs 155 for selling against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further fluctuation by the end of second session.
