THE RUPEE: divergent trend

The rupee moved both ways against the dollar on the currency market on Tuesday, dealers said. The rupee strengthened versus the dollar, gaining 10 paisa for buying and for selling at Rs 99.75 and Rs 99.95 respectively, they said. The national currency also gained 20 paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 127.90 and Rs 128.15, they said.
In the second Asian trade the dollar edged up against the yen on Tuesday after a Japanese minister clarified earlier remarks about the yen's weakness that had toppled the greenback from a 4-1/2-year high against the Japanese currency on Monday.
The dollar rose 0.2 percent to 102.69 yen after economics minister Akira Amari said he hoped the yen settles at a level justified by fundamentals and where the impact on imports and exports is balanced. The dollar was trading at Rs 55.04 versus the Indian rupee, the greenback was at 3.0105 against the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.1310 in relation to the Chinese yuan.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar commenced trading at its overnight closing of Rs 99.90 and Rs 100.00 as its buying and selling rates, respectively. The dollar witnessed no change in its buying rate that stayed unchanged at Rs 99.90, while it was improved from Rs 100.00 of Monday to Rs 100.10 on selling side, the dealers said.
Similarly, the rupee showed stability and remained unchanged on buying side while it was declined on selling side against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 151.40 and Rs 152.00 compared with day earlier closing of Rs 151.40 and Rs 151.65, respectively, they added.
The dollar opened at Rs 99.80 (buying) and Rs 100 (selling) against last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session. It closed at Rs 99.80 (buying) and Rs 100 (selling) by the end of evening session.
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 154 (buying) and Rs 155 (selling) against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further fluctuation by the end of second session.
