A full bench of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) at Lahore registry on Monday sought replies from federal and all provincial governments within fortnightly in a petition questioning import of food products prohibited under Islamic injunctions.
Petitioner, a bar member, Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, submitted that food products having prohibited ingredients were being imported without any restraint due to ambiguity in the laws concerned. He said the prevailing laws did not have bifurcation in (Halal and Haram), permissible and prohibited food products in Islam. He alleged that food products prepared with pig fat and liquor were easily available at many departmental stores.
He said the Muslims had been deceived by multi-national companies under the garb of "imported" products. The petitioner prayed that the relevant laws should be amended to stop import of prohibited food products in the country.
