Khyber Pakhtunkhwa doctors demand protection

28 May, 2013

Strongly reacting to the increasing incidents of kidnapping for ransoms of the doctors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the doctors' community has demanded the protective measures on war footing basis to prevent such incidences in future.
Addressing a press conference here at press club on Monday, the Provincial Doctor's Association (PDA) President Dr Shahsawar said that it was complete failure of police and law enforcement agencies to control the increasing incident of kidnapping for ransoms of members of the doctors' community. He said that they had raised the issue several times with the authorities concerned, but no serious step was taken against the organised mafia behind this practice.
Accompanied by Dr Ramzan, Dr Azmat and Dr Salman, he informed that three doctors had released from captivity of abductors in Peshawar after paying them ransom amount a day before. He further explained that four doctors had been kidnapped by unidentified armed men five days ago and shifted them to unspecified location.
He, however, lamented that the government and authorities had taken action against the abductors, because of which the kidnapped doctors had been released after paying ransom amount by their families. Dr Shahsawar said that it was prime duty of the government and law enforcement agencies to protect lives and property of the masses, especially doctors' community, but the non-serious attitude was intolerable, and would compel to agitate against it.
The PDA president said the doctors' community, who has significant role in delivery of better health services, are not providing better facilities and incentives due to lack of concrete services structure in the province. He said that doctors are not given high pays, allowances, and others incentives due smallest size of allocation for health in budget. The doctors' community demanded of the newly elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to take prompt steps for implementation of service structure and protection of the community. They warned that if the steps were not taken for prevention of incidents of kidnapping for ransoms of doctors in the province, would launch an agitation campaign against it.
