During the holy month of Ramazan, a huge amount of food is wasted as hotels outdo each other in presenting Iftar consisting of 40 to 50 dishes that left customers biting off more than they can chew. A large portion of the food ended up in garbage. "Most prestigious outlets like to boast of Iftars that offer at least 40 to 50 dishes in their buffet.
However, it's beyond human ability to be able to even sample all the dishes, much less enjoy a decent serving of each," Qasim Ali, a frequent visitor while talking to Agency said. "Ramazan is about fasting not feasting. We have to eat, of course, but restrain ourselves in accordance with the tradition of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)," an elderly woman Asia Erum said. "Do not use Iftar to make up for a whole day of not eating. Iftar is not the right time to show off to your family or friends how much money you can spend on food or what a good cook you are," another citizen Rayan Saddiq said.
"It is ironic that such waste is happening at a time when people should be more in touch with their faith. Islam frowns on wasting God's blessings, there is no reason for this excess," he added. These people were not alone in sharing these views as many others expressed same feelings and stressed the need of restrain in eating habits. "I'm always trying my level best not to waste food. If there is any left over, I pack it and hand it out to my poor workers, said an owner of restaurant."
