ECP can't change date for Presidential election: Aitzaz

21 Jul, 2013

Senator Aitzaz Ahsan on Saturday said the Election Commission cannot change the date for President's election. He was talking to media in the city. It may be noted that the government requested the Election Commission to change the date of elections from August 6 to any date after Eid.
However, the Election Commission has declined the request and media reports suggest that the government has decided to make another request to the Election Commission for reconsideration. The PMLN is of the view that majority of the members would not be in the country owning to last spell of holy Ramzan for their trips to Umrah. Therefore, the date should be revised for the election of President.
Senator Aitzaz said the PPP has nominated Raza Rabbani for the election of President for the reason that he belongs to smaller province. Further, he added, the Prime Minister, Speaker and Chairman Senate already belong to the province of Punjab therefore fielding someone from other province would be a wise decision. Also, he added, there is no allegation of corruption against Raza Rabbani. He said he would play his role in convincing other political parties to vote for Raza Rabbani in upcoming elections for the office of President.
