A baby boy has been born in China over four years after his parents died in a car crash, Chinese media reported.

A baby was born in China to a surrogate mother after his parents died back in 2013. The couple had frozen several embryos beforehand, hoping to have a child through in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

The deceased couple, Shen Jie and Liu Xi, had been married for two years when they decided to try IVF. Five days before scheduled to transplant one of the fertilized embryos into the woman, the couple passed away in a car accident in March 2013. In the following three years, the parents of Shen and Liu fought a legal case for the rights to four frozen embryos.

Finally, the parents got custody over the fertilized eggs and because surrogacy is illegal in China, the custodians had to go to Laos to find a surrogate mother. The baby, named Tiantian, was then born last year in December and the court was reported last week by The Beijing News.

The grandparents of the child even had to take his DNA tests for proving the relationship to Tiantian for keeping custody. For now, as per BBC, the grandparents have decided not to disclose this secret to Tiantian. Tiantian’s paternal grandfather informed that until the child is older, he would be told that his parents are overseas.

“This boy is destined to be sad on his arrival into the world. Other babies have their fathers and mothers, but he doesn’t. We will definitely tell him in the future. How can we not?” said his paternal grandfather Shen Xinan.
