During the course of hearing, in the matter of missing persons on July 23, the Supreme Court warned the government of it taking "strict measures" should no progress is made on the longstanding and unresolved issue pertaining to the case of missing persons.
During the last five years, the SC has made such countless admonishments, warnings against a large number of institutions, government functionaries, individuals and assorted defaulters for their continued blatant defiance and failure to follow and implement its orders and related directives in a number of cases of national importance. Chief Justice of Pakistan, in person, along with judges of the SC has repeatedly warned these culprits and violators of dire consequences for defying court orders.
Such warnings have been issued to federal and provincial secretaries, DGs of FIA, Commandant of FC, Rangers, a number of IGs, sundry police officials, Federal Board of Revenue, officials of Pemra, Nepra, Ogra, public sector entities, federal, provincial Attorneys General, contemnors of court, assorted ministers, interior, law and information ministries, office of the Accountant General, Customs, Excise and port officials. Ironically, not anyone of the above was ever punished for defiance of court orders and instead they continued to enjoy complete immunity from judicial retribution of any sort! Suffice it to safely say that recent warning of the SC will also lapse, unheeded! A common citizen sincerely hopes the SC would move beyond issuing such verbal warnings, that thus far have not been applied and would seriously and decisively take "strict measures" in this regard to uphold rule of law, its own prestige, judicial respect, as an effective and potent State institution. Taste of the pudding is in eating, not in the cosmetic decorative garnishing!
