Government given three weeks to appoint PIA chairman

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted three weeks to Federation to appoint a full-time Chairman of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Resuming the hearing of a suo motu case on irregularities in PIA, a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed observed that institutions should pay heed to discharging their functions in the best possible manner to put the country on path of economic development.
Additional Attorney General for Pakistan Shah Khawar submitted a report in pursuance of the court''s earlier order in the current matter, saying Acting Chairman of the PIA Aslam Khaliq had tendered his resignation on July 29. Khawar told the bench that the national carrier formed a commission to fill the slot of new chairman, adding that "it shall finalise the appointment by August 15". He also told the bench that on July 17 an advertisement was published to fill the post of Director General Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in accordance with PPRA Rules. The hearing of case was adjourned for three weeks.
