23 Oct, 2013

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has notified the suspension order of 26 lawmakers. According to the ECP, the membership of lawmakers will be restored once they satisfy the commission regarding their assets. "Notifications have been issued to the Speaker NA, Chairman Senate, and Speakers of all Provincial Assemblies. All these members shall cease to function till submission of detail of Assets," according to the commission.
Those suspended include: Senators Mustafa Kamal of MQM and Faisal Raza Abdi of PPP, three members of National Assembly, four Punjab Assembly members, one from Balochistan Assembly, six from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and nine from Sindh Assembly. The deadline of October 15 to submit asset details had been extended due to Eidul Azha holidays. The Representation of People Act, 1976 restricts all the lawmakers to declare their asset details annually by September 30. Later, their asset detail was put on website for the information of people of their constituencies. In case of any reservation, general public may contact the Election Commission of Pakistan for appropriate action, an official of ECP said.
