ECP requests Supreme Court to delay LB polls

12 Nov, 2013

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday submitted an application in the Supreme Court requesting to delay the local bodies' (LB) elections in the country. Akram Sheikh, counsel for the ECP, filed the application seeking four-month time due to various hurdles faced by the commission and holding the LB polls in March 2014. The ECP made the request citing provincial governments' refusal to make timely arrangements for holding the elections by the deadline fixed by the apex court.
The ECP took the plea that the printing of ballot papers can not be completed to hold polls on November 27 or December 7 this year. The other grounds explained in the application include non-availability of ink used for thumb impression and incomplete delimitation process of constituencies in the provinces.
