Supreme Court decision allowing ECP to reschedule LBs' polls hailed

Legal fraternity on Thursday appreciated Supreme Court's recent decision allowing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to reschedule the upcoming Local Bodies (LB) polls in the country in wake of the impediments in holding of the elections as per the earlier announced schedule.
Talking to Business Recorder, former vice president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Ikram Chaudhry said that basic intention of the court was fulfilled to ensure adherence of the certain constitutional provisions for democratic deliveries at the grassroots level through the LB elections.
Referring to an observation of the apex court in the LB polls matter which stated that the ECP and provincial governments have shown their commitment to the Constitution on the issue, a Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Azhar Siddique termed it sufficient ground to presume that constitutional arrangements are strong enough. Recently, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry accepted the plea of ECP seeking extension of polls dates and disposed of the matter.
