THE RUPEE: falling trend

The rupee depicted weakness on the currency market on Thursday in the process of trading, dealers said. The rupee lost 15 paisa against the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 108.65 and Rs 108.85, while it appreciated versus the euro, picking up 70 paisa for buying at Rs 144.50 and it also gained 30 paisa for selling at Rs 145.75, they said.
In the forth Asian trade, the US dollar got off to a flying start hitting its highest in nearly a week against a basket of major currencies after the euro was downed by talk of more European Central Bank policy easing.
Also helping to underpin the dollar, minutes from the Federal Reserve's October 29-30 policy meeting showed officials felt they might be able to start scaling back the bank's massive asset-purchase program at one of its next few meetings.
The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 62.86, the greenback was at 3.2030 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.0925 in relation to the Chinese yuan. Interbank buy/sell rates for the taka against the dollar on Thursday: 77.75-77.75 (77.75-77.75). Call Money Rates: 06.00-08.00 percent (previous 05.50-08.00 percent).

According to the currency dealers, the dollar was opened on a healthy sign and registered gain following fresh buying. At close, the dollar was ended higher at Rs 108.70 and Rs 108.95 as its buying and selling rates against Rs 108.50 and Rs 108.80 of Wednesday, respectively.
However, the rupee showed stability and remained unchanged on buying side (Rs 172.80), while it gained 25-paisa on selling side (Rs 173.25) in relation to the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 173.00 and Rs 173.25, compared with previous closing of Rs 172.80 and Rs 173.50, respectively, the dealers said.
The dollar opened at Rs 108 for buying and Rs 108.10 for selling against last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 108 for buying and Rs 108.10 for selling.
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 172 for buying and Rs 172.50 for selling against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further change by the end of evening session.
