Workshop on microbiology, molecular genetics held at PU

22 Nov, 2013

Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics has organised a workshop for the students of Government Science College, Wahdat Road at the department for helping them understand a few concepts of the field. Addressing the seminar, Dr Zakia and her PhD student Atif of MMG Department said that to excel in the field of biotechnology, the knowledge of molecular biology was indispensable.
They said apart from being a part of biotechnology, molecular biology alone had led to numerous crucial discoveries about human genetics and microbial genetics, giving insights about diseases and their possible cures. They said molecular biology was a core subject at Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, adding the need of the hour was that the knowledge should be disseminated in sister departments especially in colleges where research work was limited.
They said the invaluable interactions and trainings could broaden the vision of students and enhance the research skills and communications with other labs. The students also learnt the Plasmid DNA isolation from different bacteria. The plasmid is isolated by using manual method and its quality and yield is checked by agarose gel electrophoresis technique, which is most important and perhaps is an indispensable technique of molecular biology. Students were also engaged in extremely interesting and knowledgeable discussion with speakers.
