Bangladesh announced plans Monday for a general election in early January despite threats by the main opposition party to boycott the polls and stage mass protests until the prime minister quits. In an announcement on state television, Chief Elections Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad urged all parties to take part in the contest.
