Eight killed as freight train derails in Brazil

Eight people were killed and eight injured when a freight train derailed in the southern Brazilian town of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, local media reported Monday. Operated by America Latina Logistica, the train had nine cars loaded with corn when it derailed on Sunday in the southern state of Sao Paulo.
It crashed into four homes, killing eight people including a child and a pregnant woman, the ABR news agency reported citing civil defence authorities. An investigation was underway and forensic experts were focusing on potential rail maintenance and brake problems.
