Pakistan's two major political parties - Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) - are all geared up for a major power show in Karachi on Saturday.
The rallies will both commence around the same time in the evening but in different venues. PTI will be holding its show at the Sunday Bazaar Ground near Aladin Park in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, while PPP has chosen Bagh-e-Jinnah near Quaid’s Mausoleum for their rally.
The rival parties had decided on the venues after a clash between PTI and PPP workers earlier this week. Both the parties initially announced to hold their rallies at Hakim Saeed Ground, which led to a clash between the two parties. Later, both the parties announced that they would be holding their rallies at a changed venue.
Along with battling for seats, PPP and PTI now fighting over ground
Preparations for both the rallies are in full swing, as PTI Chairman Imran Khan and PPP's Chairman Bilawal Bhutto will be addressing a huge gathering at their venues.
PPP has made a 120 feet long, 40 feet wide and 20 feet high stage, from where PPP leaders will address the gathering. On the other hand, PTI has constructed a 60 feet long, 40 feet wide and 60 feet stage, local media reported.
Both the parties are holding major rallies today on May 12 that is already a significant day in Karachi's history, as it was on this date 11 years ago when the city witnessed violent clashes.
Back in 2007, Karachi saw violent clashes between activists of political parties over deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s visit to the city. Various cases had been registered after the carnage but till yet there has been no breakthrough.
The clash led to several injuries while 50 people were killed. PTI and PPP have said that they will pay tribute to all those who died in the May 12 mayhem.
Meanwhile, Awami National Party, is also organizing a rally today at Bacha Khan Center located in Banaras Colony.
