The rupee failed to sustain its firmness against the dollar on improved demand for greenback, dealers said on Monday. The rupee shed seven-paisa versus the dollar for buying at Rs 104.95 and it also lost six-paisa for selling at Rs 104.96, they said.
In the first Asian trade, the Japanese yen gained broadly while investors sold risk currencies such as the Australian dollar after Ukraine's mobilisation to counter possible Russian invasion heightened geopolitical risks. The US also threatened to isolate Russia economically in Moscow's biggest confrontation with the West since the Cold War.
The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 61.91, the US currency was at 3.2790 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the greenback was at 6.1479 versus the Chinese yuan. According to the currency dealers, the dollar resumed trading at its last week closing of Rs 105.55 and Rs 105.80 as its buying and selling rates, respectively. Because of fresh buying, the dollar's rate was ended higher at Rs 105.65 and Rs 105.90 on buying and selling side, respectively.
Likewise, the rupee was depreciated against the British pound, as its buying and selling rates were improved from last Saturday closing of Rs 175.40 and Rs 175.90 to Rs 176.00 and Rs 176.50, respectively, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 105.7 for buying and Rs 105.80 for selling against last week's rate of Rs 106 for buying and Rs 106.25 for selling. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 105.70 for buying and Rs 105.80 for selling.
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 174.90 for buying and Rs 175 for selling against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further change by the end of evening session.
