THE RUPEE: all-round gains

The rupee posted fresh gains against the dollar and euro in the process of trading on Tuesday, dealers said. The rupee gave up overnight weakness in relation to the dollar picking up 11-paisa for buying at Rs 104.84 and it also gained 10-paisa for selling at Rs 104.86, they said.
In the second Asian trade, the yen slipped, taking a breather from its recent rally that was sparked by investors flocking to the safe-haven currency, but tensions over Russian military intervention in Ukraine were seen likely to lend it support in the near term. The dollar edged up 0.2 percent to 101.60 yen, edging away from a one-month low of 101.20 yen set on Monday. The euro rose 0.2 percent to 139.56 yen.
The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 62.13, the greenback was at 3.2810 versus the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was available at 6.150 in terms of the Chinese yuan. Interbank buy/sell rates for the taka against the dollar on Tuesday: 77.73-77.74 (77.73-77.75). Call Money Rates: 05.90-07.50 percent (previous 05.75-07.50 percent).

According to the currency dealers, the dollar commenced trading at its overnight closing of Rs 105.65 and Rs 105.90 as its buying and selling rate, respectively. In the absence of buyer's interest, the dollar could not sustain and was slide down to Rs 150.55 and Rs 105.80 on buying and selling counter, respectively, the dealers said.
Similarly, the national currency showed strength and was improved against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 175.50 and Rs 176.00 compared with Monday closing of Rs 176.00 and Rs 176.50, respectively, they added.
The dollar opened at Rs 105.70 for buying and Rs 105.80 for selling against last week's rate of Rs 106 for buying and Rs 106.25 for selling. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 105.70 for buying and Rs 105.80 for selling.
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 174.90 for buying and Rs 175 for selling against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further change by the end of evening session.
