Government asked to house courts in secure, gated premises: CJ addresses NJPMC meeting

Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on Saturday said judiciary and the State are equally responsible for providing inexpensive and expeditious justice. He was addressing a meeting of National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) in Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court here. The Chief Justice said the disposal of all old cases by district judiciary and ever-increasing rate of fresh institution speak about the success of the Supreme Court initiatives.
Besides reviewing the performance of the district judiciary, the committee also condemned the attack on Islamabad district court and recommended immediate shifting of courts. It asked the government to house the courts in secure and gated premises so that they could perform their functions in a peaceful environment.
The committee also considered the complaints of district attorneys regarding their deficient service structure and non-availability of promotion venues beyond BPS-19. After deliberations, the committee referred the matter to provincial governments for improving the service structure of district attorneys.
Chief Justice Jillani said the NJPMC provided a permanent forum to harmonise judicial policy within the court system for improving the capacity and performance of the justice system in the country. He said the committee embarked on the path of reforming the administration of justice and took important decisions including formulation of NJP. He said the results of these initiatives were encouraging showing improved performance of the justice sector.
Federal Shariah Court Chief Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmad Khan, Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar, Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Mian Fasih-ul-Mulk, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Anwar Kasi and Secretary Law and Justice Commission attended the meeting. Chief Justice of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Muhammad Azam Khan, Chief Judge of Supreme Appellate Court Gilgit-Baltistan Rana Muhammad Arshad Khan and other judges also participated in the meeting on special invitation.
