Musharraf's appearance dependent on situation: lawyer

10 Mar, 2014

Pervez Musharraf's legal team has told Business Recorder that his appearance on March 11 (tomorrow) in the Special Court would be dependent on the prevailing security situation that particular day. The Special Court trying him for alleged treason has summoned the accused on March 11 to indict him on charges of treason.
Faisal Hussain Chaudhry, a member of the Musharraf's defence team, told this correspondent that "Musharraf's legal team has expressed its serious concerns with former President's security in writing though unfortunately these concerns have not been considered by either the prosecution or the court. We regard this lack of consideration as reflective of a non serious attitude of both the prosecution and the court," Faisal Chaudhry maintained.
He stated that the Special Court is giving credence to assurances by an "incapable" administration of Islamabad district and officials of Interior Ministry.
"My client is not an individual within the contemplation of an ordinary reference but a former President and a former chief of army staff whose life is in danger due to his role in tackling terrorism in the country," Faisal claimed.
A prosecution team member, Ikram Chaudhry, stated that there is no legal reason left for Musharraf not to appear before the court on March 11. He added that the accused has already exhausted all available remedies on various objections with respect to bias and constitution of the court. Chaudhry added that notices have already been issued to Musharraf to ensure his appearance before the court.
