State Bank of Pakistan and Pakistan Banks' Association has joined hands in a drive to clean up I. I. Chundrigar Road of wall chalking, garbage and other waste. On the initiative of Acting Governor SBP Ashraf Mahmood Wathra, Sunday March 30 was celebrated as "Clean Chundrigar Road - 2014" day. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at State Bank of Pakistan. Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebaad Khan was the chief guest. It marks the beginning of a year-long campaign to clean I. I. Chundrigar Road.
The 2.5 km road is divided into eight sections allocated to eight different banks: Bank Alfalah limited, National Bank of Pakistan, United Bank Limited, Bank Al Habib, Habib Bank Limited, MCB, Habib Metropolitan Bank Limited and JS Bank Limited will participate in the drive.
Speaking on the occasion Governor of Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebaad Khan said that every citizen of Pakistan needs a clean area to work and live in. "Throwing garbage in the streets, roads or parks has become a common practice in our society. In public places dustbins are seldom found. Even if dustbins are installed, people do not use them properly." He urged all citizen of Karachi to embrace the cleanliness and wall chalking day and take some positive steps towards making Karachi the city of our dreams.
Acting Governor SBP Ashraf Mahmood Wathra said that no society could afford to ignore the significance of cleanliness and hygiene. He reminded the audience that earlier in a similar project in 2007, funds were supplied for a similar project for construction and refurbishing I. I. Chundrigar Road. SBP and other stakeholders had contributed the huge amount of Rs 230 million for the project. But after the completion of the project, Municipal Administration did not look after its cleanliness and maintenance. He urged all the stakeholders to come forward and join hands to purge the road of garbage and take active part in the campaign.
The campaign was formally launched with the joint ribbon cutting ceremony by the Governor Sindh and acting Governor SBP.
Deputy Governors SBP, senior officers of SBP along with their families, Commissioner Karachi, City District government officials and workers, representatives from commercial banks and other enterprises operating along or in the neighbourhood of I.I Chundrigar Road attended the ceremony.-PR
