The social media picture-sharing site Instagram has announced a new feature that will let users mute posts on their feed from people they follow or even from people they don’t follow.

Instagram announced in its blog post that in an effort to control what posts users see on the social media app, they have decided to introduce ‘mute’ in news feeds. This feature will let users hide posts from showing up in news feeds from specified accounts without the need of unfollowing them.

With this change, Instagram wrote that the users can make their feed even more personalized. However, the feature has not yet been launched and Instagram says it will be rolled out in coming weeks.

New feature to show users amount of time they spend on Instagram

When an account has been muted, the user can still see posts on their profile page and will get notified about comments or posts the user has been tagged in. However, the account that has been muted will not be notified about the change. The user can also unmute them at anytime and get the posts back on the feed.

In order to mute an account, the user would have to tap on the ‘…’ menu present in the post’s corner. From a list of options presented upon tapping, the user can chose whether to mute posts, or mute posts and stories from the particular account. Posts and stories can also be muted by pressing and holding on a story from the story tray, or from a profile.

Instagram explained about the previous changes they introduced for better browsing experience. It wrote, “In March, we introduced changes to improve your browsing experience in feed and make it more fresh. We also heard that you want to understand how feed works, so we updated our Help Center to give you a better sense of how it’s ordered.”

The blog post further read, “We’re aiming to make feed the best place to share and connect with the people and interests you care about. Mute will be rolling out over the coming weeks. To learn more, visit our Help Center.”
