Petroleum prices: SHC seeks explanation from federal government

15 May, 2014

Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday issued a notice to federal authorities, asking them to submit an explanation for not adjusting petroleum prices in accordance with rupee appreciation. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar was seized with the hearing of a petition filed by a non-profit organisation, the United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, against a hike in petroleum price.
Rana Faizul Hassan, NGO's general secretary, submitted that despite appreciation of rupee against dollar, the federal government had not provided any relief to people by appropriately reducing petroleum products' prices. After appreciation of rupee, the government had only cut Rs 1.60 in petroleum price which was not sufficient for the people hit by inflation, he said while requesting the court to direct the federal authorities to reduce petroleum price by Rs 8. The hearing of case was adjourned till August 7.
