Karachi situation: Jamaat-i-Islami presents seven-point 'Public Charter'

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Karachi has presented a 7-point 'Public Charter' for resolving the issues confronting by the people of Karachi. JI Karachi Chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman presented the 'Public Charter' during a press conference at Idara-e-Noor Haq. The Charter consists of issues pertaining to law and order, economy, education, health, transport, water and sewerage and recreational activities.
During the press conference, Hafiz Naeem highlighted the main features of the Charter. Regarding law & order he demanded the government should unveil the identity of the arrested criminals regardless of their political affiliation, establish transparent judicial system, take effective measures for elimination of street crimes, impose complete ban on political recruitment in police and other law enforcing agencies, and reform police department on modern lines. The Charter also propose economic measures including announcement of special packages for industries, ensuring proper supply of gas and electricity to the industrial sector, effective measures for protecting industrialists from kidnapping for ransom and extortions, establishment of tax-free zones in Karachi, creating employment opportunities on war-footing basis, and a special development package for Karachi, same as announced when Nimatullah Khan was City Nazim.
The charter demand establishing of two new government universities in Karachi, two new medical colleges, an IT university, a women university and an engineering university, besides 50 new colleges in Karachi and revival of government-run schools.
It also demand Emergency Health Centre at town level, establishment of cardiac center in every district of the city, two new hospitals consisting of 1000 beds in city and ensuring provision of free health services to the people. Hafiz Naeem said that the JI also demands introduction of metro-bus service in all five corridors, revival of Karachi Circular Railways (KCR), revamping of traffic police system and running traffic awareness programmes for public.
Highlighting the issue of water shortage in the city, Hafiz Naeem said that JI Charter had also a plan for improvement of water system in Karachi. He demanded early completion of K-4 project for uninterrupted supply of water, establishment of desalination plants, elimination of illegal water hydrants and water mafia, ending political recruitment in Water & Sewerage Board, construction of power plants as per the agreement with K-Electric and elimination of illegal electricity connections.
"JI is also formulating an effective plan for revival of recreational and sports activities in city and demanded starting of Talent Hunt Show at grass root level, ensuring provision of basic sports facilities to youth, introduction of recreational and sports activities at union council level, special measures for revival of national game, Hockey, and removing encroachments on parks and playgrounds in the city," he added.
Earlier, JI Karachi Chief briefed media about the meeting with Prime Minister, wherein the party leadership informed Prime Minister about the prevailing situation in the city.
"JI informed Prime Minster that the business community and the people of Karachi are badly affected by the deteriorating law and order situation of city and the ongoing operation has not yielded the desired results," he added. Hafiz Naeem further said that the JI also emphasised on the formation of vigilance committee in order to monitor the entire process of operation against criminals.
"The JI leadership questioned the Prime Minster, why the government has not yet ordered to arrest the 98 most-wanted criminals among which 30 are affiliated with MQM and 10 with ANP, as Rangers has prepared their list," he added. He further informed media that the JI had demanded the Prime Minister for removing No-Go areas in the city, deweaponise Karachi, giving free-hand to police and Rangers in Karachi operation and removing incumbent Sindh Governor. It also underlined the need to have a proper mechanism to keep check on LEAs so that no excess could be committed with any innocent citizen.- PR
