One of the rules of styling is that a necklace must suit the figure of the person wearing it. "A small, petite woman with delicate features can wear small to mid-sized gemstones," says stylist Silke Gerloff. "An opulent necklace will ruin her look."
The opposite is true for more robust women who look good with big necklaces. Medium-sized jewellery suits tall, slender woman. "Angular or oval jewellery looks right on a roundish figure," she says, while round-shaped jewellery would just underscore the corpulent look of a large figure. The neck determines a necklace's length. "The chain should be at least the length of the cleavage on a person with a short throat otherwise it will look even smaller," says Gerloff. Any length of chain goes well with a long neck.
The neckline also plays a role. "Don't pick the same shape as the cut-out," advises Gerloff. If you have a round neckline, avoid choosing a round necklace. The same applies to an oval neckline. A tight neckline looks good combined with a mid-length or long chain in an oval shape or with a pendant that pulls the chain down to give a V-shape. A larger round neckline looks good with a short chain that lies within the cut-out. Long, oval chains and short, round chains look great with a v-shaped neckline. Also try wearing two oval necklaces at the same time.
