Parliament plays key role in promoting democracy: Naek

Senator Farooq H. Naek on Sunday said parliament as one of the key state institution in a democratic system had a critical role to play in promoting democracy and good governance. Senator Naek was addressing the 11th Workshop of Parliamentary Scholars and Parliamentarians at Wroxton College, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, said a message received here from the UK.
A Pakistani delegation, comprising senators Farooq H. Naek and Dr Abdul Qayyum Soomro, and Secretary Senate Amjed Pervez Malik was in the United Kingdom to participate in the workshop.
Naek presented a paper on "The accountability of Parliamentarians" and apprised the participants about the democratic procedures in Pakistan that ensure coherent policy making and good governance.
Naek observed that in modern democracies, there existed growing interest more than ever before in issues related to democracy and good governance around the world.
He effectively highlighted Pakistan's perspective. Participants appreciated steps taken by Pakistan to strengthen the democratic institutions.
Senator Naek congratulated workshop organizers for this opportunity to share views and exchange ideas on issues of common interest and concern and hoped that deliberations of the workshop would go a long way towards helping the parliamentarians of member countries undertake concrete measures and policy initiatives for holding themselves accountable to public and public institutions. The two day Workshop was jointly sponsored by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Center for Legislative Studies, University of Hull, and UK.
