Imran's 'long march' hits a deadlock: Aitzaz

16 Aug, 2014

Opposition leader in the Senate and the PPP stalwart Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has said that Imran Khan's long march has hit a deadlock and it can have positive ending if all stakeholders stay within their constitutional limits. According to him, success of the sit-in is difficult as riots would not be acceptable. He said it is not easy for the army to interfere, saying that the army has no constitutional authority under the constitution, which states that the army operates under the authority of the government.
Even if army harbours any such intention, it would tantamount to violation of Constitution. He said the issue had been decided by a full bench of 17 judges of Supreme Court in 2009 where all cases justifying martial law had been set aside. There is no need of repetition of martial law after this judgement, he added.
