Carlos Tevez scored his first Champions League goals for more than five years to give Juventus a 2-0 win over stubborn debutants Malmo in Group A on Tuesday. The feisty Argentine flicked the ball to Kwado Asamoah in the penalty area and then ran on to the Ghanaian's back-heeled pass to slot the ball past Robin Olsen in the 59th minute.

He then secured the points by curling in a free kick from the edge of the area in the 90th minute of the Group A match. Tevez's first goal bailed out Juventus who appeared to have run out of ideas as they battled a well-organised Malmo defence. The visitors, who reached the 1979 European Cup final but had never qualified for the Champions League group stage, had the best first-half chance when Magnus Eriksson's close-range effort at the far post was stopped by keeper Gianluigi Buffon's feet. Malmo, with an average age of just over 24, were anything but overawed as they kept Juve at bay for nearly an hour.
The midfielder fired home his 40th European goal in the last minute of stoppage time. But this was no classic to rank alongside that win or other victories at Anfield over the likes of Olympiakos or Chelsea before they took a leave of absence from the competition in 2009. This was a hard-fought victory after an achingly frustrating night with the Anfield faithful having to endure typical nail-biting tension before going home happy.
Italy striker Mario Balotelli, with his first goal for the club since his move from AC Milan, broke Ludogorets' resistance after 82 minutes, only for Liverpool to self-implode on the stroke of full-time when Dani Abalo took advantage of poor play by Simon Mignolet to round the keeper and equalise for the visitors.
Olympiakos Piraeus secured a surprise 3-2 victory over last year's Champions League runners-up Atletico Madrid to make a dream start to their Group A campaign on Tuesday. The Greek champions went ahead on 13 minutes at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium when slack Atletico marking at a corner allowed young French defender Arthur Masuaku to drill home a low shot. It got even better for the hosts just after the half-hour mark when Ibrahim Afellay doubled the advantage.
