Partly Facetious: Picture and narrative are the same

19 Sep, 2014

"Nawaz Sharif says crores voted for him to be the prime minister and he is not going to allow a few thousand at best to determine whether he retains his office or not."
"So? What's wrong with that picture?"
"The picture is fine but the narrative doesn't support that."
"Hey, the picture and narrative are the same."
"No my friend, the picture is a few thousand - numbers which swell by evening which probably explains why the government thought it could arrest those leaving or entering Khan's dharna."
"But..."
"Hang on, I am not finished. The picture is Nawaz Sharif's rather brooding face looking out of a helicopter window which to me at least appears disdainful of the crowds below as well - and the crowds below are the flood victims."
"He can work on the expression you know..."
"The picture is the flood victims getting angrier by the day against Mian sahib and his loyal lieutenants."
"The narrative is that 14 million voted for Nawaz Sharif in the 2013 elections and 7 million voted for Imran Khan and around 6.5 million voted for the PPP."
"I bet you those who voted for the Khan would now not vote for him."
"Perhaps, but then look at the pictures, how many who voted for Mian sahib in the 2013 elections would vote for him now."
"OK, so the picture says not all."
"And where did Mian sahib win most of his seats?"
"Many from the flood areas in Punjab."
"I rest my case and urge the two sides to look at the pictures as well as the narrative."
