For all the joys that mobile phones, tablet computers and the mouse have brought to the world, there is a downside for many: chronic pains shooting up the arms and shoulders of many an avid technology user. German technology industry association Bitkom has come out with a few tips for avoiding the pain.
Typist's cramp, or tenosynovitis, can be a consequence of extended use of the thumb or typing upon a mobile device. Avoid this by typing with all fingers, not just the thumbs, and by not typing too quickly.
Another problem is neck pain brought on by straining to see while typing on the small displays of notebooks and tablets. Avoid this by getting an external keyboard, mouse and possibly even a monitor for use when not on the go.
Using a mouse can lead to problems with your arm if everything is not set properly at your workspace. It's best to sit so that your upper thigh and lower legs and upper and lower arms are at right angles. Your mouse and keyboard should be at the same level as your elbows and palms.
