China is literally going through a rain of sea creatures during a massive storm along with hailstones the sizes of golf balls.

China’s Qingdao city is struck with a massive storm where sea food including lobsters, star fish and prawns came down along with heavy rain on windscreens of cars and windows.

As per Express.co, the storm was so intense that ocean critters flung from the ocean into the land on cars’ windscreens. The storm had hurricane-level wind speeds reaching up to unbelievable 125km per hour and left people questioning and labeling it as ‘seafood rain’ on social media site Twitter.

A theory from social media asserts that the sea creatures were just blown from the intense wind from nearby food stalls. While, some other believe that these creatures were sucked out from the sea into the land carried by the strong winds.

Yet another strange sea creature washes ashore

Science Alert explains, the process revolves around a phenomenon called ‘tornadic waterspouts’ where huge columns of swirling winds suck things from the sea and move them to the inland, usually during a severe thunderstorm. An article at the US Library of Congress explains, “Like a tornado, a mature waterspout consists of a low-pressure central vortex surrounded by a rotating funnel of updrafts.”

“The vortex at the center of these storms is strong enough to ‘suck up’ surrounding air, water, and small objects like a vacuum. These accumulated objects are deposited back to earth as ‘rain’ when the waterspout loses its energy. Most of the water seen in the funnel of a waterspout is actually condensate — moisture in the air resulting from the condensation of water vapor,” read the article.

Moreover, though the phenomenon is rare, it has been seen at least four times in the past two years where sea creatures were carried to land in Iran, US, Sri Lanka and Mexico. Also, back in 2015, it was raining millions of baby spiders in Australia too.
