A new SD card with a huge memory has been announced that can store more than 25,000 HD movies and it might possibly wipe out the need of bulky hard drives.

The SD Association – the group that sets memory card standards – has declared a new format dubbed SD Express that expands the overall storage capacity of SD cards from 2TB to a whooping theoretical 128TB, reported Engadget.

Aiming to replace usual hard drives, the SD Ultra Capacity (SDUC) format of SD Express is so huge that consumers can store more than 25,000 complete HD movies, 16 million songs if they are about 8MB each, or 26 million photos if they are 5MB each, all in just one tiny chip. Apart from boosting storage capacities, the card will also boost data transfer speeds to as much as 985MB per second.

Such SD cards will be of an immense help for video creators shooting in 4K, 8K or VR. However, unfortunately, the SD Association has not yet revealed when these cards will hit consumer markets and they might even cost a bit too much, wrote BGR.
