Give sugarcane growers a fair deal, Punjab Assembly asks government

Members of Punjab Assembly in 11th session of discussion on sugarcane here on Friday have urged the government to make sure that sugarcane growers receive Rs 180 per maund price fixed by it. Legislators in the discussion stated that farmers were not getting fertilizer and seed as promised and the product was not properly weighed when it was brought at sale points. They objected that money was taken at the time of issuance of CPR.
They stated that after showing certain obstacles farmers were forced to sell their product to agents of mafia and hoarders at lesser amount. Members of Assembly in discussion demanded from the provincial government that legislation pertaining to sugarcane growers needed to be improved and therefore new legislation in that direction should come forthwith.
Legislators in the discussion on sugarcane dilated that government officials should not act powerless in front of mafia and money of sugarcane growers for their product should be given to them within 15 days of sale. Parliamentary Secretary Finance in a query period stated that Bank of Punjab was established under Provincial Assembly Act 1989, Act X11 of 1989 on July 30, 1989. He disclosed that Bank of Punjab assets at the end of 2013 were Rs 352,698 million.
He said in addition of getting a security, the bank gave loans in pursuance to the State Bank, banking laws and Company Ordinance. Parliamentary Secretary answering another query stated that Bank of Punjab members including Board of Directors, Chairman and President were eleven.
Parliamentary Secretary Information to a question said that Punjab Arts Council had constituted a script scrutiny team that on receiving a script gives a written report. He said a permission to stage a drama in Sahiwal and other cities of Punjab was given under instructions of Home Department. This permission is given after an approved committee sees censor rehearsal. The house was later adjourned by chair for Monday.
