Karachi Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested one of the suspects involved in the killing of two renowned professors - Dr Shakeel Auj and Professor Syed Sibte Jafar. "Some five persons were involved in the killing of Karachi University's Professor (Dr) Shakil Auj, however, one of them, namely Mohammad Mansoor, has been arrested," Karachi Police chief Abdul Qadir Thebo told a press conference at Central Police Office.
Thebo said that the under arrest suspect has also confessed his involvement in the murder of renowned poet, scholar and the principal of Liaquatabad's Science degree college, Professor Syed Sibte Jafar in 2013. The accused, a resident of Liaquatabad, is presently performing his duties at Sindh government's Liaquatabad No 10 hospital as a ward boy, Thebo said, adding that the accused during police investigation has confirmed his affiliation with a political party.
"Muhammad Mansoor has disclosed that he along with his two accomplices - Faheem Jabalpuri and Ahtesham - killed Dr Shakeel Auj on September 18, 2014," the police chief said, adding that the accused has also confessed that he gunned down Professor Syed Sibte Hussain Jafar, son of Syed Ahmad Mian Zaidi.
He added that the suspect had also admitted to killing of three members of a political party in 1993, besides his involvement in an attack on Rangers personnel in September 2009. It may be recalled here that Dr Shakil was killed when five unidentified assailants had ambushed his car near Baitul Mukarram mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on September 18, 2014. Dr Mohammad Shakeel Auj was an author and dean at Karachi University's faculty of Islamic Studies. He also used to edit Al-Tafseer, an HEC recognised research journal on Islamic Studies.
