Dar urges BISP to expand its outreach

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar here on Sunday asked the BISP to launch a drive with true spirit, expanding its outreach to cover larger number of people under its welfare schemes. This institution, serving as a part of safety net and providing social protection to the people, should ensure that most deserving segments of the population are benefited, the minister remarked.
The minister chaired a meeting focusing mainly on BISP methodology to register beneficiaries for cash stipends. The meeting was also attended by Chairman Nadra. Ishaq Dar opined that Nadra and BISP could work in tandem to devise an effective apparatus which facilitates provision of support and assistance to needy and deserving applicants.
The secretary BISP said, currently the institution catered to around 4.8 million beneficiaries (families) and the number would be expanded to over 5 million by close of FY 2014-15. He said in accordance with observation of the minister, due care would be taken that the poor and needy were never ignored. Chairman Nadra said his organisation would extend all possible help in devising the required mechanism, facilitating the BISP. Senior officials of the Ministry of Finance, BISP and Nadra attended the meeting.-PR
