LUMHS organises workshop on clubfoot treatment

The Department of Orthopaedics, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro organised a "Hands-on Workshop" on Ponseti Technique for clubfoot here on Wednesday. While addressing the participants, the Vice Chancellor LUMHS Professor Noshad A Shaikh said the Ponseti technique provides the treatment for developmental turned foot (clubfoot).
This method for clubfoot treatment is nearly 95pc to 98pc effective when used properly by a trained health care provider and is considered the "gold standard" treatment for clubfoot. Health care workers in underprivileged areas can be trained to use the method, helping hundreds of thousands of children walk around the world.
Co-ordinator of the workshop, Surgeon Faheem Ahmad Memon, said that Ponseti technique is an easy and non surgical treatment and it is need of hour to provide proper information to the public regarding the treatment of clubfoot by Ponseti technique as most of the people are not aware regarding this low cost and effective treatment for a deformity
Professor Anees Uddin Bhatit, Focal Peron Ponseti International, Pakistan said, "The Ponseti International Association is the global leader in training and educating healthcare providers on the treatment for congenital clubfoot.
He informed that till today 40 Orthopaedics surgeons throughout Pakistan have been trained in Ponseti technique who are serving the population even in the rural areas. Number of Hands on Workshops has been arranged under his supervision for training of Post-graduate students. For the awareness of public regarding the treatment/follow-up of Clubfoot through Ponseti Technique material has been published in Urdu and Sindhi so that the deformed foot can be treated at the early stage with lowest cost. Professor Ameen Chunoy, Dr Zameer Soomro, Dr Mehtab Pirwani, Dr Irshad Bhuto also delivered their presentation on the subject.
