Pulses import rises by 37 percent: PBS

The country's pulses import mounted by 37 percent to 254.557 million dollars in July-February 2014-15, official figures mentioned. Thus, the import showed an increase of US 68.105 million dollars during July-February 2014-15 as compared to the commodity's import of 186.452 million dollars in July-February 2013-14, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said.
In term of volume, pulses import went up by 131, 293 metric tons (44 percent) to 429,977 metric tons in July-February 2014-15 from 298,684 metric tons in July-February 2013-14.
In February 2015, pulses import recorded a rise of 9.133 million dollars (43 percent) to 30.425 million dollars from 21.292 million dollars in February 2014, PBS indicated.
Import volume of pulses surged by 71 percent to 61,738 metric tons in February 2015 from 36,175 metric tons in February 2014, PBS mentioned.
Importers said that the country was short of its production to meet the local demand for pulses, which resulted in increase in the commodity's import.
