538 cases of misappropriation unearthed in Pakistan Post: National Assembly body told

Director General, Pakistan Post briefed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Communications that 538 cases of misappropriation involving loss of Rs 559 million were discovered during the last five years. Some cases were registered by the police, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The committee met on Tuesday in the Parliament House, Islamabad under the Chairmanship of Sufyan Yusuf, to discuss follow-up of the recommendations of Standing Committee given in the meeting held on March 11, 2015.
The director general informed the committee that Rs 107 million had been recovered from the officials who were at fault and were taken to task according to the quantum of their offences.
The committee directed the Ministry and Director General, Pakistan Post to control the fraud cases in consultation with NAB/FIA and recover the embezzled amount.
The committee also directed to fix time line to inquire into the fraud cases at departmental level. Pakistan Post followed the banking system and blocked the ways of fraud in the department. The committee directed to submit a brief about the Task Force for discussion and suggestion.
The Director General, Pakistan Post further informed the Committee that 405 Post Offices were opened and 584 were closed throughout the country for last five years.
The committee also directed to vacate the properties/housing units encroached upon by other departments/un-authorised persons. The director general further informed the members that Pakistan Post had appointed 1666 persons on regular basis, 178 were appointed on contract and 1007 were appointed on daily wages in different pay scales during the period from 2010 to 2014.
The committee observed that training was compulsory for all officers/officials and directed the Pakistan Post Office Department to arrange it for officers/ officials in future.
