Sugarcane crop has been sown over an area of 1.690 million acres of land in the province of Punjab for the season 2014-15 with hopes to attain a production of 39.700 million tons. Punjab Agriculture Department (PAD) spokesman claiming this here on Wednesday advised the cane growers to complete nitrogen fertilisers' second application to spring sowing of cane by May end and also ensure eradication of weeds from the field to get maximum per acre yield.
'Production can be maximised by 25 per cent by complete eradication of weeds from sugarcane fields,' the spokesman added. He also urged the growers to use pesticides with consultation of local experts of the department. Regarding watering, he said that sugarcane sown in February needs 64 inches of water per acre and reduction in it may cause negative impact on its production.
