After some interval, the monster of "targeted killings" has reared its ugly head again in Karachi, the city of teeming millions. Some few days ago, so-called "unidentified gunmen" targeted police officers. The 'target killers' also killed others who included some qualified personalities. A wave of fear and anxiety pervades the city due to such acts of terrorism.
The federal and Sindh governments have failed to maintain law and order in the city. We were saddened and shocked by the murder of professor of Karachi University Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman widely known as 'Yasir Rizvi' who was murdered by target killers. He succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. Such types of killings are causing immense loss to educational institutions. The government and law enforcement agencies are required to step up efforts against criminals.
Journalists' associations, members of civil society, and different students' and teachers' organisations have strongly condemned the killing of KU professor and demanded the arrest of his killers. Unfortunately, however, police have failed to make any headway into this case.
