The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) Punjab has approved a flood protection scheme for enhancing capacity of Nullah Bhed and Laila Drain in District Sheikhupura at the cost of Rs 740.537 million here on Thursday. This scheme was approved in the special meeting of PDWP. Punjab Chairman P&D Board Muhammad Irfan Elahi presided over the meeting.
Provincial Secretary P&D Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, Members of the Planning & Development Board, Provincial Secretary concerned and other senior representatives of the relevant provincial departments also attended the meeting. According to senior official, the Punjab government had also approved Rs 2.75 billion multi-phased mega project to save Gujranwala division from the flood disasters through early re-modelling, desilting and pavement of the protective dykes of the five seasonal nullahs in the future.
The government is also spending Rs 350 million to save the export-oriented city Sialkot from recurring flood threats and disasters caused by Nullah Bhed. The district administration has begun widening, removing of the sediments from the bed and realigning of the banks of the Nullah Bhed, which passes through the commercial, industrial and residential areas of the city.
