Slight fluctuations were seen in the value of the rupee versus the dollar on the money market on Wednesday, they said. The rupee gained four-paisa against the dollar for buying at Rs 101.78 and Rs 101.80 respectively, dealers said.
In the third Asian trade, the dollar hovered at its highest in over a week against a basket of major currencies early on Wednesday, a day after its biggest one-day bounce this month as the market's focus shifted from Greece to prospects for higher US interest rates.
Reasonably positive US data and comments from Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell, who said he was prepared to raise interest rates twice this year, helped sustain a rally in Treasury yields and the greenback.
The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 63.70, the greenback was at 3.7520 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.2092 versus the Chinese yuan. Demand for the dollar continued for the second consecutive day that helped its appreciation against the rupee which lost 20 paisas versus dollar for buying and selling at Rs 102.90 and Rs 103.15 against the overnight closing of Rs 102.70 and Rs 102.95 of Tuesday, respectively. The pound sterling's buying and selling rate improved from the day earlier closing of Rs 161.00 and Rs 161.25 to Rs 161.50 and Rs 161.75.
The dollar opened at Rs 101.75 (buying) and Rs 101.85 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 101.75 (buying) and Rs 101.85 (selling). Pound Sterling opened at Rs 155 (buying) and Rs 155.50 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 155 (buying) and Rs 155.50 (selling).
