"Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a significant decrease in the incidents of terrorism and casualties during last six months of the current year as compared to the corresponding period of last four years." The Chief of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Salahuddin ststed this while briefing to the Inspector General of Police Nasir khan Durrani regarding the overall terrorism situation in the province.
As per the statistics, 131 incidents took place during the current year as compared to 290 in the year 2014, 281 in the year 2013 and 203 in the year 2012. The incidents had dropped 59 percent as compared to last year. Similarly, during the current year, 63 deaths occurred as compared to 212 in the year 2013. Out of those 63 deaths, 23 police personnel embraced Shahdat. The deaths are 70 percent less than the year 2014 and 83 percent less than year 2013. Similarly, 156 persons were injured during the current year as compared to 590 in year 2014, 1074 in year 2013 showing a decrease of 74 percent as compared to last year and 85 percent decrease as compared to year 2013.
The CTD is now handling all terrorism related cases right from the registration of cases to investigation. During the current year, CTD has been able to trace 104 terrorism cases including very high profile cases and cases of target killing of police officers. There has also been a major breakthrough in arresting a gang involved in target killing of police officers and other civilians. KP police has adopted a policy of offensive-cum-defensive for handling terrorism. During the current year, they launched 9,865 search operations resulting into the recovery of around 8,063 arms and 332Kg of explosives being used for IEDs. The strategy of denying bases to the terrorists in settled area has also helped the police in reducing these incidents.
Under the strategy of target hardening, 921 cases were registered against educational institutes for not taking appropriate measures. Similarly 575 cases were registered against hotels for not verifying the credentials of guests from Nadra system before allowing them to stay in the hotel. Recently, the KP police had started taking action against those persons holding fake CNICs and persons who attested the credentials of the bogus card holders. So far 2648 persons have been charged under these offences. The IGP praised the performance of CTD and directed to finalize the investigations expeditiously and all efforts to be made to secure their conviction from the courts.
