Partly Facetious: Nawaz Sharif a well-known household name outside Pakistan?

20 Aug, 2015

"Who is the most well-known Pakistani?"
"Nawaz Sharif? He is the country's Prime Minister after all."
"You do a survey internationally and I bet you people wouldn't know who he is or which country he hails from."
"What are you: a Pakistani politician or one of our home-grown journalists who claim to speak for billions of Pakistanis!"
"There is no need to get uppity, you know and I know that the likelihood of such a survey being commissioned is highly unlikely. But I don't think Mian sahib is a well known household name outside the country....maybe in India though even there I can't imagine their farmers knowing about him or indeed caring who is our elected leader."
"So, by your logic Zardari sahib and his children are also not well-known internationally... do you reckon the Khan is well-known internationally?"
"He is better known because of cricket though could you please ask the Khan what he means by politicised? I mean first he claims that he politicized the women in this country and then he claimed that his wife is politicized and all due to the dharna..."
"I guess he was referring to what he achieved after the dharna - because he sure as hell didn't win any by elections after that."
"The reserved judgement due on 22 August on NA 122 and...."
"That case predates the dharna."
"Oh, so I guess by politicised he meant winning the battle but losing the war?"
"I think he also lost the battle? I mean politicisation without an electoral victory..."
"He says the party swept the local bodies elections in Haripur."
"So Haripur is politicised at a local but not national level?"
"Don't be facetious, but the Khan is well-known in the UK or in other cricket-loving nations which are under 10 or so but it is Malala Yousafzai I reckon who is the most well-known Pakistani ever. And need I add she is also the Pakistani most able to get an appointment with any one she wants including the US President. Now Mian sahib and Sartaj Aziz and..."
"Now who is being facetious!"
"Mian sahib can get an appointment with countries that sell us tractors - that's a start."
"Don't be facetious."
