The Sindh government on Tuesday informed the High Court (SHC) that the governor of Sindh has withdrawn the notification of making Professor Naushad A Shaikh vice chancellor of the Dow University of Health & Sciences (DUHS). SHC bench headed by Justice Muneeb Akhter disposed of the petition filed by the Pakistan Medical Association and Dr Saeed Qureshi who moved the court against the appointment of Dr Shaikh, after the government's reply.
On Tuesday's hearing government's counsel submitted that the governor's notification has been withdrawn. When the petitioner's prayer has been accomplished SHC bench disposed of the petition. On the last hearing the court had suspended the operation of the notification that made Professor Shaikh as VC of the varsity. The petitioner submitted that university had formed a search committee to find a suitable candidate which was contacted by 12 candidates including Dr Saeed Qureshi. The committee forwarded a summary to chief minister recommending Dr Qureshi as the vice chancellor, but on the same day the governor appointed Dr Shaikh as varsity's VC, the petitioners submitted. The petitioners submitted that the governor has no authority to make changes to the chief minister's recommendation and this appointment was the violation of article 12 (1) of DUHS.
