Ukraine, the world's biggest exporter of sunflower oil, has almost completed its 2015 sunflower harvest, threshing 10.9 million tonnes of the commodity from 99 percent of the sown area, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday. The yield has reached 2.18 tonnes per hectare this year versus 1.94 tonnes a year earlier, it said in a statement.
Ukraine had harvested 9.7 million tonnes of sunseed at the same date last year. Farmers have also harvested 3.67 million tonnes of soybeans from 97 percent of the sown area, it said. Ukraine, which harvested just 1.0 million tonnes of soybean in 2009, harvested 3.9 million tonnes of the commodity in 2014.
