An accountability court on Saturday sent the Sui Southern Gas Company's Deputy Managing Director, Shoaib Warsi, along with former managing director Zuhair Siddiqui on a 14-day remand, on charges of embezzlement and terror financing. The accused, who were reportedly taken into custody following a raid at the company's head office in August, have been handed over to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for 14 days. SSGC's deputy managing director remanded in Rangers custody for 90 days.
The two were earlier interrogated by the Rangers under Section 11EEEE of the Anti-terrorism Act which allows armed and civil armed forces of the country to detain any person suspected to be involved in terrorist activity for as long as three months.
Rangers claimed the two were involved in embezzlement of funds and financing terrorism. Further, according to NAB, the suspects confessed being involved in corruption before a joint investigation team during their detention. According to reports, misusing their authority, the duo awarded contracts to individuals while bypassing the due process. The two were also involved in unlawfully inducting persons into the utility office, thus causing a loss of billions to the national exchequer.
