Business Recorder op-ed writer, noted economist and former cricketer Dr Zafar Altaf died of heart attack in Islamabad on Saturday. He was 74. Dr Zafar Altaf also served as head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Chairman of Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC). Dr Zafar Altaf served as Secretary PCB from 1972 to 1975.
He later served on the national selection committee, and as chairman of the committee from 1994 to 1996. He managed the Pakistani cricket team that finished second in the World Cup in 1999. Dr Zafar Altaf chaired PARC in the 1990s, and again in 2009. He authored eleven books on different topics. Being batsman, he was selected to tour India with the Pakistan team in 1960-61, and scored 262 runs in eight first-class matches.
